How to do Bible Study using Bible Study books

A simple method to learn Bible is by using Bible study books. This page explains how to use thematic Bible study books to help you understand Bible.

What is Bible Study?

Before we learn how to do Bible Study, we need to understand first about what Bible study is. It is a way to know words of the Lord deeply by observing and understanding Bible personally and then, take practical applications in our lives.

Why study the Bible?

1. John 8: 31-32

Jesus said one of the characteristics of his disciples is hold Jesus’ teaching. Of course, the only valid source to know about Jesus’ teaching is the Holy Bible itself.

How to hold on Jesus’ teaching in Bible? We can do several things: listen the words of the Lord (from sermons), read Bible, study the Bible, memorize verses in Bible. So, study the Bible is one of many ways to hold on Jesus’ teaching, which is the characteristic of his disciples.

2. I Pet 2:2

New Christians are like newborn babies, they spiritually crave for spiritual milk to grow in their salvation. Our spiritual food is word of the Lords in Holy Bible. So, we need to provide time to learn Bible.

How we study the Bible?

Ezra 7: 10, Acts 17: 11 : We have two examples from two different people: Ezra and the Bereans. Both of these people devoted themselves to study and observed the Scripture with eagerness.

Here, some practical tips to study the Bible with eagerness:

1. Provide minimum 2 hours per week to study the Bible

2. Find quiet place, with minimum disturbances where you can concentrate.

3. Use some aid materials (pen, notes, Holy Bible, Bible study books)

4. Step-by-step to do Bible study:

a. Pray to ask Holy Spirit’s help

b. Take a look at the topic and sub-topics and try to understand them

c. Read each verse on the topic and ask these questions:

  • What does this verse mean? (try to look the context-previous verse and verse after the verse)
  • What is the connection between this verse with my personal life?
  • What is the connection between this verse with the topic and sub topic?
d. Answer the question on the Bible study book.

e. Conclude its sub topics.

f. Make the general conclusion from the topic (by asking what, how, why, the result, etc)

g. Try to take some practical applications from the topic.

Things that you should notice:

1. Write down things that you don’t understand or can’t answer. If you have a Bible study club/group, you can discuss about them.

2. Have a good record. Try your best to write them down in a good form that is readable.

3. It is not something easy to do in the beginning. But, study the Bible is a invaluable investment. So, we should follow the examples from Ezra and the Bereans: have eagerness and devotion to study Bible.

Example:

The Spirit-Filled Follower of Jesus (Design for Discipleship)
Chapter 1:
Being an obedient follower of Jesus
Sub chapter 1 :
Basis for obedience

1. What do these following passages tell you about God?
a. 1 John 4: 16

We can do the step no 4c, ask these questions:
- What does 1 John 4: 16 mean?
-What is the connection between 1 John 4: 16  with my personal life?
-What is the connection between 1 John 4: 16 with the topic and sub topic?

After that, we answers the question from the sub-chapter: what do these verses say about God?
